It depends on the type and the mechanism. In strong wind every awning should be retracted — with a wind sensor this happens automatically.

A motor is comfort: it opens at the press of a button and pairs with a wind sensor. Manual is cheaper and needs no power. A motor can also be added later.

Acrylic fabrics last many years if the awning is retracted in wind and over winter. After that only the fabric is replaced, not the awning.
